The Market in La Penita
by Elaine on Dec.30, 2010, under Blog Posts
Today is the market day in La Penita, a town about 20 minutes north of here. We stayed there two years ago and really enjoyed the ambience. So off we went in a collectivo from Lo de Marcos for market day. It was very crowded with many vendors selling everything possible. Most of the crafts were located in the main square, but down the streets were vendors with commercial kitchen ware, clothing, CD’s, parts for your stove, etc. We were greeted by a fellow selling freshly picked strawberries, which we just had to have. Then the next vendor sold freshly baked whole grain breads with sunflower seeds. And of course, we just had to have a loaf. I have posted a few photos of what you can expect to see here.

Hello! I was searching google for tapestry and stumbled on your blog. Love your tapestries especially the nature designs! I was excited to see the bark tapestries because I have been planning my own series based on photos I took of campfire embers in the dark. 😛 I haven’t posted any plans yet on my blog but I have one tapestry going currently. NO colour though and it’s making me INSANE!
Kudos on dying all your fibers. I haven’t got to spinning and dying for weaving yet, though I do enjoy all those things separately! Anyways just wanted to say cheers!

Hi JacQueline: Thank you for your kind comments. I would love to have a look at your blog spot…so will do that as soon as I can. It is great that we can share out work with each other and the wider community of tapestry weavers. I am currently in Mexico and have spent the last 10 days with rug and tapestry weavers from Teotitlan de Valle in Oaxaca. Also I was part of a wonderful exhibition of MAIZ small format tapestries at the Textil Museo de Oaxaca. All the best! Elaine

Hi Diana:
Thanks for your comment. I see the baskets in the markets in Mexico. But I have no personal connections with the makers. If you were in Puerto Vallarta in the month of February there is a very large market in the Wal Mart parking lot…there were many basket makers there this past year. The designs, materials differ from region to region.
